We could not have granted 1,200 wishes this past year without the support of our valued donors. The companies, community groups and individuals who support us year after year provide the much-needed funding that allows us to continue to fulfill the most heartfelt wish of every wish child.
The Slaight Family Foundation is playing a pivotal role in helping Children’s Wish bring the power of a wish to even more children through their $1-million pledge. The pledge is the largest in Children’s Wish history, and this extraordinary support will help children and their families enjoy a respite from their illnesses and renewed sense of hope.
The Slaight Family Foundation’s Children and Youth Initiative aims to support the healthy development of children across Canada. The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada was one of 11 worthy national charities that received a $1-million pledge over four years to expand services to improve the physical, mental and social well being of children in Canada.
“Each of the organizations and their programs are ensuring that children and youth are supported in all areas of their lives. By focusing on younger Canadians, they are shaping the future of our country,” said Gary Slaight, President and CEO of The Slaight Family Foundation.
A series of hospital tests revealed a mass in his chest pushing against his heart, esophagus and lung. “Our hearts stopped when we learned that his diagnosis was acute lymphoblastic lymphoma,” explained Tulsi’s mother. The ensuing chemo treatments were brutal and extremely painful, resulting in significant weight loss, the use of a feeding tube and countless sleepless nights and hospital stays for Tulsi.
A hospital social worker told the family about The Children’s Wish Foundation and Tulsi was approved to be granted his heartfelt wish: a trip to Disney World including a visit to the Kennedy Space Center. Tulsi had always been interested in astronomy and space and the trip allowed him, his parents and older brother to be together as a family after three years of challenge. One of the many highlights of the trip was having lunch with an astronaut who had been on several space missions.
“The journey we have been through with our son has opened our eyes, especially (to) those with critical illness. We decided to donate online at www.childrenswish.ca. We were eager to wish it forward so another family could experience the joy of a wish,” shared Tulsi’s father.
"Having young children has really changed the game in an inexplicable way. I don't want any child to feel sad or in pain. If I can help grant wishes now and in the future, that's a profound mark to leave,"
Emily hopes that others will also be inspired to leave a gift in their will for Children's Wish. "Making a bequest is one of the best ways you can support families going through this type of struggle," she says. "There's just so much power in a wish."
Through the campaign, employees work closely together to raise funds in support of The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada. Through a series of fundraising initiatives, employees throughout Sofina Foods’ 23 locations across Canada contributed $140,000 including a dollar-for-dollar match by Sofina Foods Inc.
“From day one, our employees rallied behind this cause,” said Umeeda Madhany, Senior Director, Sofina Foundation. “From planning the events to donating their money, this campaign certainly would not have been possible without their support and generosity. Having seen, first hand, just how much these children and their families go through, I’m so thrilled that we were able to partner with The Children’s Wish Foundation to grant these children their wishes.”
One of the incredible wishes Sofina Foods made possible was for Andrew, a fourteen-year-old who suffers from osteosarcoma. Andrew was able to visit Liverpool, England with his family and experience a live Liverpool FC game. He described the experience as the “best day ever”, and the trip as a celebration of his completed treatment.

The Clark family lost their son Corey at the young age of 17, after a long battle with cancer. In mourning their loss, Corey’s friends and family gained strength from their son’s core belief that “keeping a positive attitude will lead you to happiness.” This inspired them to honour Corey’s memory by beginning an annual hockey tournament in support of Children’s Wish dubbed the Corey Clark Classic.
Since its inception in 2008, the Corey Clark Classic has raised nearly $100,000 for Children’s Wish, and has now grown to include an annual golf tournament. The Clark family and the organizing committee attribute the success of the tournaments to the dedicated support of their community.
Children’s Wish is proud to have been able to provide Corey with his most heartfelt wish, a boat on which to spend time with friends and family enjoying one of his favourite pastimes, fishing. His generous spirit will live on through this incredible community’s fundraising efforts and Children’s Wish is honoured to have their continued support.
A big thank you to our most generous donors and partners. From financial gifts to donations of products and services, they keep amazing us with their generosity.
